APC wins Nasarawa, Lagos, Sokoto; NNPP wins Kano

    EditorBy EditorMarch 20, 2023No Comments5 Mins Read

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has declared the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP governorship candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf winner of the last Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kano State.

Yusuf polled 1.019, 063 votes to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasir Gawuna who polled 890,706. Mohammed Abacha of the People Democratic Party scored 15,957 votes.

The INEC Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Ahmad Doko Ibrahim declared the results at the Kano Collation Centre, INEC headquarters in Kano.

In Nasarawa State, INEC declared Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state the winner of the election in which he polled 347,209 votes to defeat his closest rival, Dr David Emmanuel Ombugadu, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who scored 283,016 votes.

Professor Tanko Ishaya, declared Sule the winner of the election.

Meanwhile, INEC has declared Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State winner of the Saturday’s Governorship elections.

But the Lagos State Chairman of LP and party’s State Collation Agent, Pastor Dayo Ekong, called for the cancellation of the elections.

He accused the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje of disappointing the youth.

Ekong decried the high level of violence, attacks, ballot boxes snatching, disruption, disenfranchisement as well as killing in some cases that characterised the exercise.

The APC’s State Collation Agent, Mr Fouad Oki, who expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the poll, described the ruling party’s victory as democracy at work.

Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, (FUTA) Akure, the Returning Officer, disclosed on Monday in Lagos that Sanwo-Olu polled a total of 762, 134 votes to defeat his closest rival of the Labour Party, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour who scored 312, 329 votes.

Oladiji said that the PDP candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran garnered 62,449 votes to come a distant third in the election.

She disclosed votes garnered by other political parties in the contest as: A (800), AA (904), AAC(627), ADC (6,078), ADP(2833), APM (884), APP (259), BP (616),NNPP (1,583), NRM (340), SDP (1,746), YPP (461) and ZLP (1,635).

Oladiji put the total number of registered voters at 7,060,195; total accredited voters at 1,182,620; total vote cast at 1,173,631, total valid vote at 1, 155, 678 and rejected votes at 17,953.

Oladiji said: “I declare that Sanwo-Olu Babajide Olusola of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law by scoring 25 per cent in two-third of the local government areas in the state and also scoring the highest number of vote cast is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.”

The returning officer invited party agents available to sign the results of the poll, but agents of the LP and PDP were not present to sign the results.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that APC won in 19 Local Government Areas of the state, the LP won in one LGA while the PDP did not win.

In his remark, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, noted that some of the allegations of manipulation leveled against him were fallacy.

Agbaje, however, said that such allegations were not strange in a clime like ours and decried the poor turn out of voters.

Assessing the process, Mr Olusegun Mobolaji, Lagos state Chairman, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) decried the pockets of violence experienced in some parts of the state as well as vote buying and apathy.

He urged the candidates to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and accept the outcome of the elections in good faith.

Mobolaji urged INEC to improve on the shortcomings in the future elections.

In Sokoto State, the PDP, which Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has sat over the state for nearly eight years, lost to the APC as INEC declared Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the governorship election in Sokoto State.

Prof. Armaya’u Hamisu, the INEC Returning Officer, made the declaration after collation of the election results from 23 Local Government Areas of the state, on Sunday in Sokoto.

Hamisu, who is also the Vice Chancellor Federal University Dutsin-ma, said Aliyu won the election with 453,661 votes.

He said that Malam Sa’idu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 404,632 votes.

The Returning Officer said a total of 17 political parties took part in the election.

He added that out of the 2,172,056 registered voters in the state, 901,513 voters were accredited for the election.

The returning officer said the number of valid votes was 864,419 while rejected votes stood at 15,357.

“Votes scored by political parties are: AA 66 votes; AAC 207 votes; ADC 329 votes; ADP 1,429 votes; APC 453,661 votes;, APGA 861 votes and APM 232 votes.

“Others are APP 155 votes;, BP 101 votes;, LP 251 votes; NNPP 427 votes; NRM 927 votes;, PDP 404,632 votes; PRP 522 votes;, SDP 286 votes;, YPP 212 votes and ZLP 113 votes.”

Hamisu said that the election was conducted in accordance with the law.

“That Ahmed Aliyu of APC having satisfied the requirement of the law is declared the winner and returned elected,” he added.
