The Ebonyi Correspondent of Independent Newspaper, Nwafor Samson, has emerged as the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the State.
Mr Nwafor who is the immediate past Chairman of Correspondents’ Chapel of NUJ, Ebonyi State, was unanimously elected following a by-election that was held, on Tuesday, at Dr Sam Egwu Press Centre, Abakaliki.
The by-election followed the resignation of the immediate past Chairman of the Union, Tony Nwizi, who was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Information and Communication Technology, (ICT) to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru.
The National Vice President, Zone C South-East of NUJ, Ifesinachi Emmanuel, while announcing the result before the teeming members of the Union on Tuesday, declared that Comrade Nwafor emerged unopposed and was returned elected.
He thanked members for their support and solidarity which made the exercise a success.
Mr. Emmanuel who represented the National President of NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, commended members of Ebonyi State chapter of NUJ for living up to their professional responsibilities.
He described Nwafor as the substantive chairman of the union in the state, following his successful election and the taking of oath of office.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Nwafor Samson, thanked the members for finding him worthy to serve.
“In fact, I’m overwhelmed by your massive support and solidarity; and one thing I will say is that I’m challenged to double my good effort to make NUJ Ebonyi State Council proud.
“I will not allow this council to go backwards, but to always seek your cooperation, make you understand this is a journey for a better welfare of our members,” he said.
