A retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Sampson Owobo and his wife were shot dead by gunmen on Sunday night in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
The incident which happened along Egbu Road, not far from the Owerri Urban police Divisional Headquarters caused pandemonium as residents and business owners shut down their businesses and ran for their lives
Ikengaonline learned from an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity that the gunmen came in a vehicle and tried to rob the couple of a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money they made from their Point Of Sale POS business.
The eyewitness said that the gunmen shot the retired ASP on his forehead, close to his eyes and his wife was also shot at her left hand side, close to her chest at a close range when they could not succeed in snatching the bag of money.
The eyewitness narrated that ”the armed robbers were carrying pump action rifles and were trying to carry a bag containing money. The husband and wife run a POS business and also sell loaves of bread.”
“The man’s name is Samson Owobo. He hailed from Edo State. He is a retired police officer. He retired with the rank of ASP. He retired about five years ago or so. The armed robbers fled; they have not been caught,” he continued.
Report says that the husband died on the spot while his wife was rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, where she was later pronounced dead.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Henry Okoye, while confirming the murder of the couple, condemned the dastardly act and disclosed that the police in the state were on the trail of the fleeing suspects.
Okoye said, “The CP frowns at the killing of the couple and he has immediately ordered investigation into their killings with the mandate to apprehend the fleeing criminals.”
