The Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has tasked Federal Government to declare state of emergency on federal roads in Anambra State and the South-East region in general.
The Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, who spoke in Awka, recently, urged the federal government to also take decisive action to address the menace of erosion in the region.
Chief Okeke Ogene noted that the recent visit by the Minister of Works, Engineer Dave Umahi, to Anambra State afforded him the opportunity to see first-hand the deplorable condition of federal roads in the state and devastation wreaked by gully erosion on critical infrastructure as well as need for immediate and sustained interventions.
He regretted that some of the roads constructed some decades ago have deteriorated and have not experienced desired maintenance to prolong their life span.
Chief Okeke Ogene stressed the need for the Federal Government to maintain stronger collaboration with state governments in designing road projects to ensure that proper environmental impact assessment was conducted before execution of the projects to protect them from avoidable challenges.
He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts in the state with regards to road projects, and tasked him to do more for the people of the state.
