Abia State Government has been granted approval by the Nursing Council of Nigeria, to begin training for Community Nursing and Mid-Wifery.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting, described the development as a milestone in Government’s efforts to revolutionalise the health sector.
This, according to her, will enable the state get enough personnel to man the health facilities in the various communities across the state.
The Commissioner said it would help the state to increase her intake into the Nursing Schools from 200 to 600.
She said that the State would now have one College of Nursing with the existing four Schools of Nursing and Mid-Wifery as campuses.
The Commissioner expressed delight that Abia State would soon begin to meet the demand for admission into Nursing.
She also disclosed that the Centre for Disease Control, CDC, had included Abia as one of the pilot states for the management of not just HIV/AIDS cases but the entire heath issues.
The Commissioner said that the aim of the Gov Alex Otti-led administration was to make Abia a leading state in the health sector in Nigeria.
