Leading by example: The death of Soludo’s dad in Anambra hospital by Christian Aburime

    By Christian Aburime

In a world inundated with political rhetoric and grandiose promises, it is rare to find a leader who not only talks the talk but also walks the walk.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, stands as an exemplar of hope, demonstrating through his actions that true leadership begins with leading by example.

His recent decision to admit and treat his late father at the Anambra State Teaching Hospital, known as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, instead of seeking medical care abroad, speaks volumes about his genuine commitment to transforming the healthcare landscape in the State.

For far too long, Nigeria’s elite have made a habit of seeking medical treatment in foreign lands, leaving behind a trail of distrust in the country’s healthcare system.

This practice, though seemingly justified by concerns over quality and accessibility, inadvertently perpetuates a cycle of neglect and underinvestment in local healthcare infrastructure.

Governor Soludo’s bold step challenges this status quo, presenting a vision of a future where Nigerians can have faith in their own hospitals and healthcare professionals. The decision to entrust his father’s care to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, as witnessed and discussed by surprised locals when the governor visited the facility to see his father’s remains, sends a powerful message that the state’s healthcare facilities are being elevated to a standard that transcends social class.

It signifies a resounding vote of confidence in the dedicated healthcare workers who tirelessly serve their communities, often in the face of daunting challenges. Under Governor Soludo’s stewardship, the transformation of Anambra’s healthcare system has been nothing short of remarkable transformation.

Investments in new personnel recruitment, infrastructure, equipment, and training have elevated local hospitals to a level that is appreciable. The once-neglected facilities are now beacons of hope, capable of providing world-class care to all who walk through their doors.

This concerted effort to bridge the gap between private and public healthcare options is a tribute to the governor’s commitment to inclusivity and fairness.

Beyond the realm of healthcare, Governor Soludo’s efforts to restore public trust in public service and institutions resonate in every facet of his leadership. His administration has prioritized transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of the common people.

This refreshing approach has reinvigorated the public’s faith in the government’s ability to effect positive change, and it stands as one of his most notable achievements. No doubt, Governor Soludo’s example serves as an inspiration for leaders across Nigeria.

It reminds us that true leadership is not about privilege or entitlement, but about service and sacrifice. It is about recognising the potential within our own institutions and investing in their growth and prosperity. It is about leading by example, so that others may follow suit so we can build a more equitable future.

In a world where cynicism often overshadows optimism, Governor Soludo’s actions remind us that change is possible, that progress is attainable, and that a better future is within our grasp.

As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from his example and work tirelessly to create a Nigeria where every citizen can proudly say, “I trust in our local hospitals. I believe in our leaders. I have faith in our future.”

Aburime is the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.
