Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those involved in the fatal motor accident that occurred at IMSU Junction, along Okigwe road, Owerri, the state capital.
The accident which occurred on Saturday evening, involving a Mack Truck and four mini busses, claimed the lives of six people while many others sustained injuries.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson in Imo State, Henry Okoye, the driver of the Mack Truck with Reg No: KWL 857 YE, heading towards IMSU Junction from Orji, along Okigwe road, allegedly lost control of his vehicle, and diverted one-way where he ran over four shuttle mini buses and some pedestrians along the road which left many seriously injured.
Governor Uzodimma, while expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, promptly deployed response teams and directed the State Commissioner for Health to ensure proper medical care for the injured, and also a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident, to hold those responsible accountable.
He also pledged to implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, while commiserating with the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased, prayed for the repose of their souls and wished the injured victims a quick recovery, noting that the Command is saddened by the avoidable accident.
The Commissioner said efforts are in progress to contact the families of the deceased and injured victims and to apprehend the driver of the truck that immediately fled the scene after the accident.
He therefore implored road users in the State to always drive responsibly and always assess the roadworthiness of their vehicles to avoid accidents.
