Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has assented to the Anambra State Electoral Law, 2024; a law to re-establish the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, whose staff have remained redundant for many years.
Accompanied by his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, Deputy Speaker, Right Honourable Chukwuma Okoye, among others, Governor Soludo signed the law at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
The Governor also signed the Anambra State Touting Prohibition Law, 2024, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Law, 2024, Health Facilities and Accreditation Agency Law, 2024, Anambra State Peace Building and Conflict Management Agency, Anambra State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (ANSOGPADEC) Law, 2024 and Market Safety and Protection Law, 2024.
Other bills signed include Trafficking In Person Prohibition Law, 2024, Anambra State Revenue Administration (Consolidation and Harmonisation) Law, 2024, Anambra State Private Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery Law, 2024 and the Law to Amend the Anambra State House of Assembly Service Commission Law 2021 and for other Connected Purposes.
Speaking specifically on the Anambra State Electoral law, Governor Soludo revealed that it will lay the foundation for organising and conducting local government election, describing it as a promise made and a promise kept.
He revealed that the extant laws met by his government on assumption of office were rickety, saying that he set out and took the pains to craft a law that is in tune with modern realities.
He further pointed out that subsequently, the electoral commission will be set up, after which they will be allowed to announce the date and time of local government election.
While appreciating the Speaker and the State House of Assembly for their responsiveness, the Governor stressed that Anambra people are now duty bound to obey the laws.
