There is palpable fear on the road leading to Dubai Estate near the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) state office in Awka, as kidnappers have reportedly laid siege in the area.
Reports coming from the area said two persons were recently kidnapped along the Dubai Street in the late hours of Monday, while four others who were victims the penultimate week were forced to pay a staggering N75 million in ransom.
Ikengaonline reports that the kidnappers have targeted a variety of victims, including a professor who paid a hefty N31 million ransom and a young couple who were compelled to hand over N45 million.
Witnesses recounted harrowing stories of the ruthless kidnappers, with one victim’s attempt to escape met with gunfire and his car set ablaze.
The recent development has reportedly left residents gripped with fear, prompting motorists to avoid stopping at the Dubai Estate junction after 7 pm.
Residents are now also forced to adjust their routines, choosing to return home early and take alternate routes to steer clear of the troubled spots.
The police have assured that they are investigating the incidents, but expressed that their efforts have been hindered by the victims’ reluctance to come forward.
