The first phase of Senator Ideke Agro Empowerment programme has kicked off in his constituency, Enugu North Senatorial District of Enugu State with 670 constituents benefiting.
According to the coordinator of the programme, Barrister Shepherdman Iyioku, the beneficiaries were expected to receive 4,000 dwarf hybrid Malaysian coconut seedlings and 8,000 plantain suckers.
The Ideke Agro Empowerment programme was held at Nsukka High School, Nsukka.
The senator, represented by his Senior Legislative Aide, Hon. Barr. Enuma Asogwa, said the beneficiaries of the first phase were from Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Eze North and Igbo-Etiti LGAs.
“They were trained in modern farming of generational agro plants such as dwarf hybrid Malaysian coconut seedlings and hybrid plantain suckers.
“Each participant received a certificate of participation and was provided with the seedlings and the suckers. It was a huge success,” he said.
According to him, “The beneficiaries’ data were also collected so that they would receive further support from the people’s senator in the future.
“The facilitators, Prof Kelvin Ngwoke, Head of Crop Science, UNN, Engr. Chris Ugwu (Don Chris) Consultant and Onyiba Shepherdman Iyioku, CEO, Ikoro Multipurpose Farms Ltd, were on ground to train the beneficiaries on how to tender their plants from planting to harvesting stages.
“After the successful conclusion of the first phase of this programme, the second phase takes place Wednesday, August 7.”
