Trailblazing scholar and communications guru, Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna, will be honoured at 19th Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting (WSAIR2024).
The award marks the grand finale of the two-day virtual Amplify In-depth Media (AIM) Conference and Awards, hosted by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ).
Okunna, the first female Professor of Mass Communication in Sub-Saharan Africa, and current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Paul University, Awka, will receive the Lifetime award for journalistic excellence.
WSCIJ also announced that Beko, Ransom-Kuti will be honoured at the event with the Human Rights Defender Award posthumously.
The event with theme: “Media Credibility, Investigative Reporting and Artificial Intelligence,” is scheduled for Monday, December 9, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the AGIP Recital Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos.
“Okunna will receive the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence and Ransom-Kuti will be honoured with the Human Rights Defender Award posthumously at #WSAIR2024 that marks the grand finale of the two-day virtual #AIMConference and #WSAIR2024.
“Chinyere Okunna is the first female professor of Mass Communication in Nigeria. The current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Paul University, Awka, Anambra State will be celebrated for her years of consistent commitment towards the growth of the Nigerian media.
“Beko Ransome-Kuti will be honoured posthumously for his civil rights and pro-democracy activism. Beyond his medical career, he founded and led groups like the Campaign for Democracy, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, and the Pro-National Conference Organisation,” said Motunrayo Alaka, the Executive Director/CEO, WSCIJ, in a statement.
