Abia State Government through the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), has said it would commence the dismantling of shanties and illegal structures obstructing free flow of traffic in Ohafia metropolis and other towns in Abia North.
Director General of GODA, Elder Obinna Agwu Odum, who made the vow during an on-the-spot inspection of Eni Njoku Road in Ebem Ohafia, promised to restore order and safety to major roads in Ohafia and Abia North
He said that the State Government would no longer tolerate encroachments into the roads by anybody.
The GODA boss expressed dismay at the alarming rate of road encroachment by shop owners in Ohafia.
He regretted that wares and makeshift structures have taken over footpaths and major roads, thereby causing traffic gridlock and accidents in some instances.
The sad development, according to him, exposes residents to significant safety hazards.
Describing the situation as an “eyesore,” the GODA boss vowed to instill sanity.
“This has defaced the area, creating an unhealthy environment for residents and road users,” he regretted.
He further noted the dangers posed by businesses operating directly beneath high-tension cables, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent potential disasters.
He said: “Road encroachment has not only disrupted traffic flow but has also put lives at risk. It is imperative to restore order and ensure that our roads are safe and functional.”
Speaking also, the Executive Secretary of Ohafia Local Government Town Planning Authority, Mr Godson, assured the public that necessary measures would be implemented to achieve the objectives of “this progressive agenda.”
He said the action “aligns with the vision of the state government under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, which prioritises development, safety, and environmental cleanliness.”
Meanwhile, some shop owners expressed support for the initiative despite acknowledging that it would affect their businesses.
