The Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) Enugu, has been ranked as number one university in Nigeria by United Kingdom (UK) based Magazine, “Times Higher Education,” in the areas of staff and students’ ratio and quality teaching.
This was made known by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Christian Anieke, while briefing newsmen on the latest global universities ranking in Enugu.
Times Higher Education (THE), is a British magazine reporting specifically on news and issues related to higher education and creating university rankings by assessing universities performance on the global stage.
According the vice chancellor, the ranking came out three weeks ago in which universities in Nigeria were ranked and GOUNI came number one from the point of view of staff and students’ ratio which indicates quality of teaching.
He added that in the general ranking of THE previously, the university was ranked “one of the best 10 best private universities in Nigeria.”
“We are also one of the 200 best universities in Africa ranked by THE. We have maintained our position as one of the best 40 to 50 universities in Nigeria always.
“And among the private universities, we have never gone beyond five and we will remain number one in South-East,” Anieke said.
He ascribed the successes to trusting in God, hard work and global styled monitoring mechanism for performances adopted by the university for its teachers and students.
“We know our students individually, as they are being placed under mentors. All these have placed us where we are today.
“GOUNI also exposed our students to education outside the country by supporting those that want to travel for further studies,” he said.
The vice chancellor explained that THE was based in the UK, adding that they ranked universities by seeing what the schools were doing practically.
“You can’t bribe your way through, otherwise, all the Nigerians university will be there.
“With this ranking, we are taking the university to the global stage.
“I will not be satisfied until we become one of the best in the world because we have capacity and young people who can be motivated to do well,” Anieke pledged.
