There has been a heavy deployment of the police at Wadata Plaza, the national secretariat of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), apparently to stop the holding of its 100th National Executive Committee, NEC, scheduled to hold today by a faction of the party against the national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
Recall that Damagum had announced the postponement of the NEC after a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, but yesterday Ikengaonline reported that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, after meeting with his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde; the Boart of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara; and other leaders of the party especially from the South-East, insisted that the Moday NEC meeting will hold as scheduled.
However, in order to stop the NEC meeting from going on, Police have taken over the PDP headquarters reportedly forcing staff and officers of the parry out of the premises.
Videos of policemen forcing staff members of the opposition party out of the PDP Secretariat is currently trending online. In one of such videos, a staff was heard pointing accusing fingers at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, as being behind the police intimidation of the PDP, saying “one man cannot hold the entire country to ransom.”
Confirming the happenings via its off X handle, the PDP blamed the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, for its woes.
“Federal Police, @PoliceNG other Security Agencies with the Order of All Progressives Congress (APC), @OfficialAPCNg harassing Board of Trustees members and staff of the Party’s National Secretariat in a bid to stop the scheduled meeting.
#PDP100ThNECMeetingMustHold,” the PDP posted.
The PDP further said in a Special Announcement simply signed by “Management,” that NEC meeting has been relocated to the Yar’Adua Centre.
“Special Announcement!
“Change of Venue for the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Meeting.
“The Meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), @OfficialPDPNig earlier scheduled to hold by 10Am at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja has been moved to YarAdua Center, Central Business District, Abuja.
