In line with the coalition momentum sweeping through Nigeria’s political landscape, Senator Ireti Kingibe, representating the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Nigerian Senate, has officially resigned from the Labour Party to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
She announced this move on Saturday, as part of the strategic shift of the ADC positioning itself as a key player in the upcoming 2027 general election.
Senator Kingibe said her decision to join the ADC comes at a time when the party is part of a broader coalition of opposition leaders aiming to challenge the ruling party.
During a press interaction, she expressed her commitment to the ADC, stating, “I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” while emphasizing her role as the Senator representing the FCT. She highlighted the evolving nature of the coalition, noting, “It’s something that is evolving, so you cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he is going to run.”
Reacting to questions concerning the constitutional grounds for her defection, Kingibe defended her decision by pointing to the internal divisions within the Labour Party.
“There are two clear distinct factions of Labour Party… even INEC got two sets of results and candidates.”
She argued that the constitution allows for such a move without penalty under these circumstances, asserting, “I would not presume to decamp if there were not two distinct factions of Labour Party.
