The royal family of Ijebuland has announced the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Ogbagba II.
In a statement on Monday signed by Prince Adedire Adetona on behalf of the family, the revered monarch was described as “a courageous leader, a revered hero, and a symbol of dignity and strength,” who lived a life of service to his people and left an indelible legacy.
“With deep sorrow but profound gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father,” the statement read.
“Kabiyesi lived a formidable life in service to his people and left an indelible mark on the history of Ijebuland. His wisdom, resilience, and unyielding commitment to justice and progress will never be forgotten.”
According to the statement, Oba Adetona will be laid to rest at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, on Monday, July 14, at 4:00 PM. Guests and well-wishers are advised to proceed directly to the venue, where condolences will also be received.
Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, was widely regarded as a bridge between tradition and modernity. His reign was said to have brought remarkable development and visibility to Ijebuland.
The monarch was also known nationally for his fearless ability to speak truth to power, advocacy, integrity, and wisdom.
Meanwhile, his family has requested continued prayers and support during this period of grief.
