The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), has established a state-of-the-art In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre aimed at addressing fertility challenges among Nigerians.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Robinson Onoh, said the centre has already brought renewed hope to families struggling with infertility.
Prof. Onoh explained that on assuming office, he envisioned creating a distinctive edge for AE-FUTHA in reproductive medicine. To achieve this, he assembled a team of highly skilled fertility experts from across the country and invested in cutting-edge medical technology.
He disclosed that the hospital’s first IVF procedure involved nine couples, six of whom successfully conceived—including a remarkable case of triplets.
“We are currently in our fifth batch of IVF cycles, with many hopeful parents undergoing treatment,” he said.
Describing the IVF Centre as a centre of excellence and the best in the Southeast, Prof. Onoh said it was designed to serve not only Nigerians but also medical tourists from outside the country.
He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing top-tier healthcare services, particularly in the field of fertility treatment.
Chairman of the AE-FUNAI Governing Council, Anthony C. Nebo, described the development as a major milestone in fertility care and reproductive health in the region. He commended the CMD and his team for their vision and dedication, noting that the success of the IVF programme has become a beacon of hope for many families.
As a show of support, Dr. Nebo announced a donation of ₦500,000 from the Council to aid the continued growth and sustainability of the IVF Centre.
He also called on the government, philanthropic organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support AE-FUTHA’s progressive healthcare initiatives.
The Council members were later conducted around the IVF Centre by Prof. Onoh, where they inspected the ultra-modern equipment, interacted with staff, and were briefed on the range of services offered.
The AE-FUTHA IVF Centre stands as a significant medical innovation in the Southeast, positioning the hospital as a national leader in reproductive healthcare.
