Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at his family compound in Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic funeral rites. The burial took place at about 5:50 p.m., shortly after a solemn funeral prayer at the Daura Central Mosque.
The ceremony drew an outpouring of grief and tributes from across Nigeria and beyond. Among the dignitaries in attendance were President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine of Niger Republic, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, businessman Aliko Dangote, and several serving and former government officials.
Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a brief illness, was flown back to Nigeria where he was received by President Tinubu. His body arrived in Daura at 4:33 p.m. in a military ambulance, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and other top officials.
The Janazah prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Daura, Sheikh Aliyu Musa, with many joining in prayers for the repose of the late president’s soul. President Tinubu paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as “a dedicated leader who served Nigeria with unwavering commitment,” and lauding his efforts in national development and the fight against corruption.
Residents of Daura and many Nigerians paid tribute to Buhari’s humility, patriotism, and strong connection to his roots. The Federal Government declared three days of national mourning in his honour, with flags flown at half-mast nationwide.
Buhari’s passing according to many of his admirers marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of service, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the nation.
