A political analyst, Darlington Agomuo, has described the legacy of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as very bad.
The lawyer made the assertion during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica on Sunday.
The death of the former president, which occurred on Sunday, was received with mixed reactions within the country.
Barrister Agomuo said there is no way that anyone can succeed in rewriting the story of the late, onetime military head of state. He said that as the first chairman of the nation’s oil company, Buhari oversaw the alleged loss of $2.8bn in oil revenue.
He further explained that while an investigation was ongoing to find out who allegedly took that money to Midland Bank in the United States, Buhari overthrew President Shagari’s government, and the issue of the missing money never came up again.
“It will be difficult for anybody to come and rewrite Buhari’s history because from the time he was head of the NNPC to now, the industry has been in turmoil. One would have thought that a Buhari, who is touted as a no-nonsense man, would have cleaned up the NNPC. But the NNPC still remains the haven of corruption in Nigeria,” the public commentator said.
Commenting on Buhari’s second coming as a civilian president, Mr. Agomuo said his performance was so bad that even officials in his own party are lamenting the deplorable state in which he left the nation’s economy.
“The APC has been lamenting about what he did to the nation’s treasury and economy. There is absolutely nothing to show from the eight years of his administration. He left the economy in shambles, and insecurity is rampant across the country. It is a very big disappointment that Nigerians went through what they did under Buhari.”
The media personality also accused the ruling APC of failing to fulfill its campaign promise of ending foreign medical trips. He said that it is shameful for the former president to have gone to London for medical care after failing to improve the country’s healthcare services during his years at the helm.
“It is very shameful that our leaders travel abroad for medical care,” Mr. Agomuo said.
“Is it that we don’t have the resources to build a world-class hospital in Nigeria that will take care of the health of leaders? Definitely, we have the money, but they prefer to go and spend it abroad.
“Even with what has happened with Buhari, no lessons will be learned because the current president is still junketing all over the world, telling us he is going for one working visit or the other, whereas he is allegedly seeking medical help.”
