In a major political development in Ebonyi State, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Joseph Onu Silas, has resigned from the party, citing irreconcilable differences and undue interference by some sitting governors.
Mr. Onu announced his resignation in a letter dated July 16, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman in Obiozara Ward, Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Describing his decision as one taken “with a heavy heart but for a more patriotic reason,” Onu said internal crises and the influence of powerful individuals within the PDP had compelled him to seek a new political direction.
He expressed appreciation for the support he received during his time in the party, where he served in key positions, including State Publicity Secretary and, later, State Chairman.
Onu also recalled his emergence as the PDP candidate for the Ebonyi South Senatorial Bye-Election in February 2024, a nomination he said followed a rigorous selection process.
Despite that milestone, he cited “irreconcilable differences, particularly the role being played by a few sitting governors,” as the primary reason for his defection.
He confirmed that he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he plans to continue his political journey and help build what he described as “a strong political movement for the overall good of our people.”
“I pray that we can all journey into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to continue forging a strong political movement for the overall good of our people,” he wrote.
Onu’s defection marks yet another wave of political realignment in Ebonyi State ahead of future elections, with analysts suggesting it could have significant implications for the state’s political dynamics.
