Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has once again declared his support for the creation of additional states in the South-East, urging the National Assembly to use the ongoing constitutional amendment process to address the long-standing demand for equity and inclusion in the region.
The governor made the call on Friday when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, led by Hon. George Ozodinobi, at the Government House, Enugu. The committee was in the state ahead of the zonal public hearing scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the International Conference Centre.
Governor Mbah also advocated the establishment of state police and the adoption of a rotational presidency, among other critical reforms. He described the committee’s visit as both timely and symbolic, highlighting Enugu’s historic role as the legislative hub of the former Eastern Region.
“You cannot discuss the evolution of legislative activity in Nigeria without mentioning Enugu,” Mbah said.
He emphasized that the constitution must be a living document—reflective of the people’s collective will and aspirations—and called on the committee to prioritize issues vital to the South East and the country at large.
“For equity and inclusivity, the South East should be granted an additional state. This would help foster a sense of belonging and address the structural imbalance that has lingered for too long.
“It is a necessary step towards unity and national cohesion,” he stated.
Mbah also called for affirmative action to promote gender inclusion through the creation of additional legislative seats for women.
On the issue of security, the governor reiterated his firm support for the establishment of state police, calling it a non-negotiable necessity amid Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
“With the current intractable security challenges, states must be empowered to respond more effectively. The creation of state police is a reform that enjoys near-universal support,” he said.
Earlier, Hon. Ozodinobi commended Governor Mbah for his transformational leadership and the rapid infrastructural development witnessed in Enugu State.
“Your achievements are monumental. In just two years, you have reversed the trend—people are no longer leaving Enugu, they’re returning to invest. You are truly walking your talk,” he said.
He assured that the Constitution Review Committee is committed to reflecting the genuine yearnings of Nigerians across all regions.
“We are here not just for Enugu, but for the entire South-East,” he added.
