Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Edo State Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has strongly condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State over a controversial video in which the Governor allegedly threatened former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, not to visit Edo without his “permission.”
Reacting in a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Akpata expressed disbelief upon first seeing the clip, describing it as something that looked like an AI-generated video or “a poorly written skit.” However, he noted that with no denial or clarification from the Governor or his spokespersons — and with the footage widely reported by credible media platforms — the incident must be taken seriously.
“That’s deeply troubling,” Akpata wrote.
He emphasized that the people of Edo State are known for their hospitality and openness and would never turn away a visitor, especially someone like Mr. Obi who came bearing goodwill.
“Mr. Peter Obi does not need anyone’s permission to visit Edo State or any other State for that matter. Not now, not ever,” Akpata said.
Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had recently donated ₦15 million to an educational institution in Edo State as part of his birthday celebrations, which his supporters — known as “Obidients” — have marked with various charitable activities across the country.
Akpata took a swipe at Governor Okpebholo, suggesting he should focus on earning the affection of the people through good governance, just as Obi has done through “exemplary leadership.”
“The timing of the Governor’s threat — on the eve of Peter Obi’s 64th birthday — only underscores his poor sense of judgment,” Akpata said.
He concluded his statement with a birthday greeting to Obi, describing him as “a man whose leadership inspires millions” and affirming that the former Anambra Governor “will always be welcome in Edo, regardless of the threats from those who see his impact as a challenge to their own inadequacies.”
