The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially elected the minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, as its new National Chairman. The announcement was made on Wednesday during the party’s 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
Prof. Yilwatda, a former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner and the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Plateau State, emerged as the consensus choice of the party leadership following extensive consultations and negotiations among key stakeholders.
The election of Prof. Yilwatda marks a significant shift in the APC’s leadership as the party prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections and begins early groundwork for the 2027 general elections.
In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, party leaders, and NEC members for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to reposition the party on the path of internal cohesion, inclusivity, and grassroots engagement.
“My emergence is not a personal victory but a call to service. I am committed to strengthening party discipline, unifying our members, and making APC a model of democratic excellence,” Yilwatda said.
The NEC meeting also addressed critical issues including constitutional amendments, updates from various standing committees, and strategies for expanding the party’s reach at the grassroots level.
Party leaders, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, were in attendance and expressed confidence in Yilwatda’s leadership to steer the party toward stability and electoral success.
Prof. Yilwatda succeeds former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently resigned from the position in July 2023.
