Renowned legal scholar and former United Nations Special Rapporteur, Professor Joy Ezeilo, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the altercation between an Ibom Air crew members and a passenger, Ms. Comfort Bob, describing it as a mirror reflecting deeper societal inequalities.
In a statement shared on her Facebook social media platform, Prof. Ezeilo noted that the 26-year-old passenger, now facing both a lifetime flight ban and criminal charges for alleged assault, is “more like nobody’s daughter” caught in a difficult situation.
She argued that the swift prosecution of Comfort contrasted sharply with other high-profile incidents, where influential individuals, including a senator and popular musician, Kwam 1, allegedly faced no serious repercussions for similar or worse conduct.
“All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others,” Prof. Ezeilo wrote, stressing that the case raises important questions about fairness, accountability, and the impartiality of justice.
While condemning any form of violence in public or private spheres, she called for justice to be “tempered with mercy,” urging a more empathetic approach that recognises the possibility of redemption after mistakes.
“Is Comfort unaware that her actions were unlawful and punishable by law? Don’t you think she is also a victim of assault? Would you prefer that the law should run its full course?” she asked, encouraging public reflection on the balance between legal consequences and humane treatment.
Prof. Ezeilo maintained that beyond the immediate headlines, the incident highlights the need for greater empathy, due process, and transparency across Nigeria’s public institutions, including the aviation sector.
