The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed media reports claiming that a Canadian court declared the ruling party a terrorist organisation, describing such claims as “false, misleading and mischievous.”
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC said the case in question—Douglas Egharevba v. Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness—did not concern the party, nor did the court make any pronouncement linking the APC to terrorism.
According to Morka, the applicant in the case sought judicial review of a decision by Canada’s Immigration Appeal Division (IAD), which had found him inadmissible under the country’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The IAD’s decision was based on the applicant’s membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its alleged acts of subversion during elections in Nigeria.
“In a decision in the matter dated June 17, 2025, Judge Phuong T.V. Ngo dismissed the application for judicial review on the ground that the Applicant was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that the PDP was an organization engaged in acts of subversion pursuant to paragraph 34(1)(b.1) of the IRPA making him inadmissible in Canada,” Morka said.
Morka clarified that the Canadian judge, Justice Phuong T.V. Ngo, upheld the IAD’s findings on subversion but “specifically refrained” from addressing terrorism allegations.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the court never made any determination on the question of terrorism in its decision,” the APC spokesman stressed.
He further explained that the only reference to the APC in the 16-page judgment appeared in the background section, where the applicant claimed to have been a member of the PDP from 1999 to 2007 and later of the APC between 2007 and 2017.
“This claim is evidently false,” Morka noted. “The APC did not exist in 2007, as the party was only registered in 2013.”
He warned that media reports suggesting otherwise were not only erroneous but also capable of misleading the public and tarnishing the party’s reputation.
The APC urged its members and Nigerians at large to disregard the claims, assuring that the court neither considered nor had jurisdiction to make any declaration against the party in the matter.
