Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, have paid glowing tributes to late Nigerian football icon, Chairman Christian Chukwu, who was laid to rest on Saturday in his country home, Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a heartfelt message on his official X handle, Governor Mbah described the former Super Eagles captain and coach as a man of simplicity, humility, and discipline whose impact transcended the world of sports.
“It is difficult for you to have met Chairman Christian Chukwu without being inspired by his simplicity and humility. His leadership and impact at Rangers International and beyond solidified his legacy as a football legend whose influence will inspire future generations,” Mbah said.

He assured the bereaved family and the football community that the Enugu State Government would immortalize the legendary defender, adding that Chukwu’s name would be permanently etched in the state’s history.
On his part, Mr. Obi said Chukwu embodied the highest ideals of sportsmanship and patriotism, noting that his contributions as both player and coach left an indelible mark on Nigerian football.
“The late Chukwu embodied all that a great athlete should be—discipline, resilience, leadership charisma, all wrapped in exceptional humility. The love and honour shown to him by friends, associates, and mentees, both in life and in death, speak volumes about the selfless and fulfilled life he lived,” Obi said.
Obi commended Governor Mbah for pledging to support veteran Rangers players, urging him to stand firm on the promise. He further called on other governors and the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of retired sportsmen and women who, according to him, “must not be forgotten in their time of need.”
Both leaders extended condolences to Chukwu’s family, the Obe community, Rangers International Football Club, and Nigeria’s football fraternity, praying for the eternal repose of his soul.
Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” captained the Enugu Rangers to several domestic and continental victories in the 1970s and later led the Nigerian national team to its first Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 1980.
