Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, has hailed the life and achievements of renowned pharmacist and industrialist, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, as he marked his 75th birthday in Umuahia, Abia State.
The milestone celebration, which Obi said via his X handle on Saturday also featured the public presentation of a book detailing Ohuabunwa’s journey, brought together dignitaries, colleagues, and admirers from across Nigeria.
In his tribute, Obi described the celebrant as “a colossus whose example continues to inspire younger generations,” stressing that Ohuabunwa’s life stands as proof of what diligence, vision, and courage can accomplish.
“As he marks his 75th birthday, I celebrate Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa not only for his past achievements but also for the enduring example he offers to younger generations. I pray that his vision for a just, productive, and prosperous Nigeria will find fuller expression in the new Nigeria that is possible,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State Governor traced Ohuabunwa’s life trajectory noting that the industrialist began his career as a salesperson with Pfizer after graduating from the University of Ife. Through discipline and resilience, he rose to become the company’s Chief Executive Officer. He later spearheaded the landmark $300 million management buyout that transformed Pfizer into Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals—one of Nigeria’s most celebrated corporate achievements.
Obi also observed that over the years, Mazi Ohuabunwa has distinguished himself as a boardroom success story, a reform advocate, and a patriot deeply committed to building a productive economy.
“His leadership, rooted in integrity and foresight, has earned him several national honours and professional awards.”
The Labour Party chieftain also praised Ohuabunwa for his altruistic venture into politics to challenge the culture of consumption.
“Deeply concerned by Nigeria’s decline from a culture of productivity to one of consumption, he ventured into politics, convinced that only bold ideas, moral courage, and visionary leadership could rescue the nation. He encountered the harsh reality of a transactional political environment where vested interests and transactions triumph over ideas. He, however, remained consistent and persistent in what Nigeria could achieve if men of character and competence were given room to lead,” Obi said of Ohuabunwa.
The event in Umuahia was both a celebration of his personal milestones and a reaffirmation of the enduring legacy he has built in business, public service, and nation-building.
