Nigerian author Caleb Onyeabor is set to release his latest inspiring novel, The Boy Who Found Gold, a moving work of fiction that blends African storytelling traditions with timeless lessons on ambition, hope, and the pursuit of dreams.
The book follows the fictional journey of a young boy from the ghetto who, determined not to end up like his father and fueled by a deep desire to provide a better life for his ailing mother, sets out on a quest for gold. Guided by the wisdom of an old family friend, Old Abe, and armed with a symbolic “book of gold,” he embarks on a perilous journey to the City of Gold in the far Western part of the country. Alongside six other boys, he encounters trials, loss, and life-shaping lessons that merge ancient wisdom with modern truths.
According to Onyeabor, “the aim is to use a fictional african story to inspire young africans with dreams.” The narrative invites readers, young and old alike, to reflect on the power of ambition, the value of mentorship, and the resilience needed to go for gold.
To further amplify its impact, the book has inspired the launch of The Boy Who Found Gold Nationwide Essay Competition under the theme “The Story of the Boy Who Found Gold: Lessons for Me and My Generation.” The competition, which will run from September 30 to December 31, 2025, and is open to secondary school students, undergraduates, and young people across Nigeria.
With its vivid imagery, universal themes, and intergenerational lessons, The Boy Who Found Gold is positioned as both a compelling read and a source of inspiration.
Critics and early reviewers describe the novel as “raw, gripping, and multi-layered,” praising its ability to resonate across cultural and age divides. The book is now available for pre-order and will be officially released in Nigeria on September 30, 2025.
