The Enugu State Government has condemned the gruesome murder of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, who was killed by unknown assailants in Eha-Ndiagu, Ehalumona.
The priest was shot dead in his car on the evening of Friday, September 19, 2025, at Aho Ishiogu, along the Eha-Ndiagu Road in Ehalumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident has sparked shock and widespread condemnation from both Catholics and non-Catholics.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the state government described the murder as cowardly and cold-blooded.
According to the statement, the government reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains its top priority and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The state government has the required technology, human resources, and demonstrable capacity to track down and defeat the remnants of evil in the state,” the statement read.
To this end, the government announced a N10 million bounty for anyone with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the killers.

The government also commiserated with the family of the late priest, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the entire Catholic community over the tragic incident.
