The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), has thrown its weight behind the planned Abuja rally convened by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to demand the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, and made available to newsmen in Umuahia on Wednesday, FENRAD described the rally as “timely and necessary,” given what it called the Federal Government’s continued defiance of multiple court orders directing Kanu’s release.
The group said it stands in full solidarity with all “democratic voices” calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to respect the rule of law and uphold Nigeria’s obligations under both the Constitution and international human rights protocols.
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in defiance of the law, sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the credibility of our judicial system. No true democracy can thrive where court orders are treated with disdain,” the statement read.
FENRAD noted that it has held consultations with South-East political leaders, including governors, National Assembly members, and members of the Abia State House of Assembly, over the matter. While commending ongoing efforts by these leaders, the organization stressed that “public action, unity of purpose, and moral courage are now urgently required.”
The group also applauded the “encouraging response” from Hon. Obinna Agwuocha of the House of Representatives and the “stated intention” of members of the Abia State House of Assembly to approach the Attorney General of the Federation for lawful intervention. However, it urged them to move beyond dialogue to “coordinated, collective action.”
“If leaders of conscience across Nigeria truly believe in the values of democracy, equity, and justice, then this is the moment to act—boldly and publicly,” FENRAD stated.
The group commended Omoyele Sowore for his “courage and consistency” and called on other human rights defenders, civil society groups, and well-meaning Nigerians to join the Abuja rally as a show of national unity in defense of justice.
FENRAD’s key demands include: The immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; respect for judicial authority and compliance with court rulings; an end to the political persecution of citizens exercising their legitimate rights to free expression and peaceful advocacy.
The organization further disclosed that it is mobilizing members and partner organizations to participate in the rally, urging Southeast leaders to either physically attend or publicly endorse the protest.
“This is a critical moment. Justice must not be delayed further. No one is free until we are all free,” the statement concluded.
