The Ebonyi State Government has approved scholarships for 140 students to study at the newly established Ebonyi State University of ICT, Oferekpe Agbaja, in Izzi Local Government Area.
The decision was among the key resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, presided over by Governor Francis Nwifuru.
Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr. Ikeuwa Omebeh, announced the development on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting.
Omebeh said the move underscores the administration’s commitment to building a technologically skilled workforce and positioning the state for competitiveness in the digital economy.
According to him, the scholarship programme was designed to ensure equitable representation across all 13 local government areas of the state, including the host community.
“Council reviewed the level of compliance from each of the benefiting local government areas and directed the Ministry of Tertiary Education to expedite action to ensure all targeted councils are adequately represented within the specified period,” Omebeh stated.
He noted that the initiative aligns with Governor Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs agenda, which prioritizes education, youth empowerment, and innovation as key pillars of sustainable development.
The Ebonyi State University of ICT, Oferekpe Agbaja, was established to equip students with practical skills in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies critical to Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Omebeh further explained that the scholarship would ease the financial burden on parents while preparing young Ebonyians to seize global digital opportunities.
“The scholarship will not only relieve parents of financial burdens but also prepare our young people to take advantage of global digital opportunities,” he said.
The Council also considered updates on other educational projects, including the remodeling of the State Library Complex. The architectural design was presented, with a directive that a bill of engineering measurement be submitted at the next meeting for approval.
Omebeh reaffirmed that the government’s education and ICT initiatives are targeted at empowering Ebonyi youths to become innovators, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders of tomorrow.
