The National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, has concluded a one-week intensive training for Abia farmers on best agronomic practices for sustainable production and value addition in roots and tuber crops.
The programme featured advanced cultivation techniques from land preparation to harvesting, as well as indigenous seed systems aimed at reducing Abia’s dependence on external food sources, some of which pose health risks.
Farmers were also trained on value addition, including processing cassava, yam, sweet potato, cocoyam, ginger and other crops to boost income and market competitiveness.
Chairperson of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Abia State chapter, Mrs. Gift Ogbonna, lauded the initiative, noting that AFAN partnered NRCRI to equip farmers with modern skills in processing, packaging and branding to meet national and international standards. She clarified that the training was self-funded by AFAN members, driven by their desire to stay updated on modern agricultural practices.
Coordinator of the Farming Systems Research Programme, NRCRI Umudike, Dr. Innocent Onyekwere, said participants were taught practical skills including the use of cassava flour in baking and storage methods to reduce post-harvest losses. He warned farmers against harmful processing practices such as adding detergents when making fufu.
Dr. Onyekwere urged government to channel funds and inputs to genuine farmers rather than “audio and political farmers with no knowledge of agriculture.”
A participant, Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, described the training as impactful, adding that the skills gained would enhance productivity and improve livelihoods amid current economic challenges.
