Governor Alex Otti has organised a state birthday celebration in honour of music icon and elder statesman, Sir Paulson Kalu, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the music industry.
Sir Paulson Kalu’s highlife music gained popularity across Nigeria shortly after the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.
Speaking at the colourful ceremony held over the weekend at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, and attended by leading figures in the music industry, Governor Otti said Kalu had paid his dues in the musical arts.
Describing the music legend as a man of strong values, the Governor explained that his administration’s deliberate policy of celebrating distinguished Abians, regardless of political affiliation, was aimed at inspiring others to strive for excellence.
Otti reiterated his commitment to honouring accomplished Abians and residents who have excelled in their various careers.
Represented by his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the Governor described the octogenarian as an extraordinary son of Abia State who has made global impact through music.
He said: “Sir Paulson Kalu is a man who embodies strong cultural and family values, a man whose life reflects discipline, resilience and purpose. His contributions to Abia and to Nigeria are not only remarkable, they are worthy of admiration and celebration.”
Otti called for collective commitment to building a new Abia where hard work and dignity are valued, noting that Paulson Kalu represents what is possible when one embraces such a vision.
He added: “Let this celebration strengthen our collective resolve to continue building the new Abia where hard work is honoured, where dignity is protected, and where every generation is valued. As we celebrate him today, let his life continue to inspire us and remind us that excellence is achievable, brilliance is attainable, and purpose is a lifelong journey.”
In their goodwill messages, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Mr. Matthew Ekwuruibe; the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Emeh Uche; and the Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Chief Eleanya Kalu, praised the music icon for his commitment, unique style, and philosophical depth in music performance.
They commended Governor Otti for his policy of celebrating achievers while they are still alive and congratulated the celebrant.
Earlier, the President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Abia chapter, Chief Ejeh Williams, thanked the Governor for celebrating excellence.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abia State, Comrade David Amalaha, represented by Nath Nwoke, lauded the Governor for honouring a legendary artist like Paulson Kalu.
They said they would continue to follow Kalu’s legacy and uphold his exemplary leadership in the music industry.
Responding, the celebrant, Sir Paulson Kalu, who was visibly excited, thanked Governor Otti for celebrating him, saying he was surprised when he received the news that the state government would host his 80th birthday.
