The abductors of seven members of Ezimo community in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State have demanded a ransom of N20 million for their release.
A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers — suspected to be bandits — contacted the relatives on Tuesday to make the demand.
“They have called us to demand N20 million,” the source said.
As at the time of filing this report, neither the Enugu State Government nor the State Police Command has issued an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Udenu LGA, Hon. Aka Eze-Aka, has sympathised with the victims’ families and assured residents of the council’s renewed commitment to protecting lives and property.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Jude Eze, the chairman said the local government was taking steps to strengthen security in the area.
The statement reads in part: “In the past 72 hours, Udenu Local Government Area has witnessed disturbing security breaches, with incidents of kidnappings reported around Ezimo, Umuosogide, and some parts of Amalla. These cowardly attacks have understandably thrown our people into fear and uncertainty.
“The Chairman of our Local Government Council, Aka Eze-Aka, has remained committed, holding a series of strategic security engagements with relevant stakeholders, aimed at tightening the security architecture across our communities.
“As a result of these coordinated efforts, the criminals have been severely restricted in movement, forcing them into a position of vulnerability. Security operatives have swung into action, combing targeted locations with intelligence-driven precision to ensure the safe rescue of our brothers and sisters in captivity.
“While ongoing consultations may lead to immediate restructuring of security units in the area, the Chairman assures Ndi Udenu that every necessary measure is being deployed to crush the criminal elements and restore absolute normalcy.
“The Chairman sympathises deeply with the affected families and calls on residents to promptly report any suspicious activity. He appreciates those already providing credible intelligence and urges the public to remain calm, vigilant, and continue going about their normal businesses.”
