Biafra: UK Parliament to debate Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest Wednesday

    By July 6, 2021No Comments2 Mins Read

    Curled from Infobytes News

The Parliament of the United Kingdom (UK) will on Wednesday debate on the alleged role of Kenya in the arrest of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Ikengaonline gathered that the UK Parliament will also enquire into Kanu’s subsequent extradition to Nigeria against his wish.

Recall that Kanu, who holds British citizenship was on June 27 extradited from Kenya to Nigeria by the Federal Government in order to continue his court trial.

Kanu is facing about 10 count charges bothering on treason, treasonable felony, illegal possession of firearms among others.

The trial, however, stalled about two years ago when the accused jumped bail in bizarre circumstances.

Meanwhile, the UK Parliament will on Wednesday set aside a debate to discuss the British’s assessment of Kenya’s role in Kanu’s arrest.

In a parliamentary schedule sighted by Ikengaonline, Lord Alton of Liverpool will be raising  the issue at the House of Lords.

The debate will query the government on the separatist leader’s transfer to Nigeria.

The schedule partly reads: “Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of:

“The alleged role of the government of Kenya in the detention and alleged mistreatment of Nigerian activist Nnamdi Kanu.

“The circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr Kanu to Nigeria against his will, and of any assistance being provided to him by the High Commission in Abuja. HL1665,” the document read.
