The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday launched a fresh attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of openly working against the party’s interests while still claiming membership.
In a press statement issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said Wike’s recent end-of-year media chat, in which he reportedly described himself as the “number one supporter” of the presumptive All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, confirmed allegations of anti-party activities that led to his expulsion from the PDP.
According to the PDP, Wike’s public endorsement of an opposition platform while remaining in the party represents what it described as “anti-democratic adventurism” and exposes what it called his long-standing role as an “agent provocateur” in Nigerian politics.
The party traced Wike’s history of internal conflicts to his tenure as governor of Rivers State beginning in 2015, alleging that he repeatedly fueled leadership crises within the PDP. The statement cited his involvement in the party’s internal struggles during the Ali Modu Sheriff era, his role in the emergence and subsequent removal of former national chairmen Uche Secondus and Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, and what it described as a pattern of promoting and later opposing party leaders.
Beyond national leadership disputes, the PDP accused Wike of undermining internal democracy in Rivers State through the imposition of candidates, exclusionary practices, and the prevention of the party’s presidential candidate from campaigning in the state during previous elections.
The statement further alleged that Wike thrives on political conflict and seeks relevance through disruption, adding that his recent comments reflected fear of losing political influence, diminishing control in Rivers State, and frustration with the current PDP leadership.
The PDP claimed that Wike and some of his allies, including Sam Anyanwu, have now openly aligned with the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing them of working to weaken the PDP as part of what it described as a “clandestine agreement” driven by personal interests. The party warned that any agreement aimed at achieving an illegal purpose would not be enforceable.
Reaffirming its confidence ahead of the next general election, the PDP assured Nigerians that it would field a credible presidential candidate in 2027 capable of winning broad public support. It stressed that the party could not be personalized by any individual.
The statement added that the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee is intensifying efforts to rebuild the party, resolve outstanding court cases, and position the PDP for electoral success in 2027.
