Thunder in paradise: Barr Agbasiere hosts epic tennis championship in Awka

    EditorBy EditorJanuary 7, 2026Updated:January 7, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

It was four days of unforgettable tennis at Milatel Hotel and Suites, Awka, the Anambra State capital, as the venue hosted the 2026 Annual Tennis Championship, sponsored by renowned philanthropist and sports enthusiast, Barrister Tony Agbasiere, popularly known as the Celebrity Barrister.

The prestigious tournament attracted 34 players from the South-East and South-South regions, who battled fiercely in the Men’s Singles and Mixed-Doubles categories. Despite the scorching January sun, the athletes delivered scintillating performances, showcasing exceptional talent, resilience, and passion for the game.

The championship featured both professional and academy players drawn from different parts of Nigeria and across Africa, creating a vibrant festival of top-class tennis. Spectators were treated to thrilling rallies and high-quality competition throughout the four-day event.

In the Men’s Singles main draw, emerging talents from the South-East clashed in electrifying encounters. The semi-final between Iloputa Ikechukwu and Okonkwo Ikenna was particularly gripping, with Ikenna overpowering Ikechukwu to book a place in the final. In the other semi-final, Oparaoji Uche defeated Michael Chima to advance. The final showdown saw Okonkwo Ikenna emerge victorious over Oparaoji Uche to claim the Men’s Singles title.

The Mixed-Doubles event was equally entertaining, with Iloputa Ikechukwu and Ekpeyong Ruth clinching the title after an impressive display marked by skill, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship.

The tournament lived up to its billing as one of the finest tennis competitions in West Africa. Commendations also went to the main organizer, Mr. Albert Anele, whose professionalism contributed significantly to the event’s success.

Barrister Tony Agbasiere’s impact on youth development through tennis was a major highlight of the championship. Through sustained sponsorship and mentorship, he has helped steer many young people away from the streets, offering them purpose, discipline, and opportunities through sports. His efforts continue to uplift not only the players but also their families.

This year’s championship featured a total prize pool of ₦2.5 million. Barr. Agbasiere was personally present throughout the event, motivating the athletes, distributing sports kits, and generously supporting participants—leaving smiles in his wake.

Speaking to journalists, Chief Christian Ezenwoke (Ochili Nise) praised the professionalism and dedication of the players, commending their spirited performances from January 1–4, 2025. He also encouraged the athletes with cash gifts in recognition of their efforts.

The championship attracted tennis veterans, representatives of the Anambra State Sports Commission, families, dignitaries, and sports lovers from across the region. Many applauded Barrister Tony Agbasiere for his unwavering commitment to sponsoring the tournament annually and for bringing elite tennis back to his Anambra homeland.
