The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday raised its tally of serving state governors to 29 following the official defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in a significant political development for the state.
Governor Yusuf announced his decision to join the ruling party at an event held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House. He defected alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, further strengthening the APC’s political presence in the state.
The governor said the move was taken in the best interest of the people of Kano State, noting that it was aimed at promoting unity, ensuring political stability, and accelerating development across the state. He added that his priority remains delivering good governance and meaningful dividends of democracy to residents.
The event attracted several high-profile political figures, including former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; and Senator Kawu Sumaila. Members of the Kano State Executive Council, party stakeholders, and other government officials were also in attendance.
It will be recalled that Governor Yusuf had earlier resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to protect the broader interests of the people of Kano State.
In a resignation letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, the governor stated that his withdrawal from the party took effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.
With Yusuf’s defection — along with 22 state lawmakers — the APC now controls three of Nigeria’s largest voting blocs: Kano, Lagos, and Rivers.
