The Executive Board of the Ellsberg Whistleblower Award has thrown its weight behind Mr. Yisa Usman, former Deputy Director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), commending his courage in exposing alleged systemic corruption within the agency.
In a letter, the Board disclosed that Mr. Usman emerged as the closest runner-up for the 2026 Ellsberg Whistleblower Award, following a rigorous selection process by an independent international jury.
The jury noted that Mr. Usman’s whistleblowing revealed widespread violations of public financial management and recruitment procedures, describing his actions as a significant contribution to the public interest.
According to the Board, his disclosures have played a critical role in deepening public discourse on corruption, governance, and the protection of whistleblowers, while exposing how systemic corruption erodes fairness, accountability, and the rule of law.
The letter also highlighted the repercussions Mr. Usman has reportedly endured since raising the alarm, including his dismissal from public service, prolonged legal battles, and alleged threats to his family.
“These consequences underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive Whistleblower Protection Act in Nigeria,” the Board said, calling on authorities to strengthen legal safeguards for individuals who expose wrongdoing in the public interest.
The Board further described Mr. Usman’s actions as a demonstration of integrity, civic duty, and democratic responsibility, urging that his commitment to transparency and accountability be accorded national and international recognition.
“Mr. Usman’s dedication to integrity and democratic responsibility deserves support and the highest recognition,” the statement concluded.
