The Enugu State Government says it has surpassed the national measles and rubella immunisation target of 85 per cent, achieving over 101 per cent coverage through field commitment and inter-ministerial collaboration.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, made this known in Enugu on Saturday while reacting to the just-concluded national immunisation exercise in the state.
Ugwu attributed the success to a comprehensive, team-based strategy involving coordination across the ministries of gender affairs, poverty alleviation, information, education, as well as traditional leadership, religious institutions, and local government structures.
The commissioner commended Governor Peter Mbah for his exceptional support, which he said has transformed the health system and demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated and synergistic approaches to healthcare delivery.
“With Gov. Mbah’s backing, all our Primary Healthcare Centres and the cold-chain systems are receiving the measles and rubella vaccines, and they are being preserved at the right temperatures, making them effective.
“Your Excellency has not left us unsupported. Currently, we are recruiting and employing thousands of Primary Healthcare workers that you have approved for us, and that is why we are able to deliver on this assignment.
“We are most grateful for the support and the backing you are giving to the health system to make it better, and it is indeed getting better,” he said.
Ugwu also commended the governor’s engagement with health workers, noting that their welfare is being promptly addressed.
“Your Excellency, we are happy that you are not only helping us engage healthcare workers, but you are also looking after their welfare.
“Currently, in our teaching hospital, many are expressing interest in doing their internship at ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, while others are seeking residency positions in Enugu State.
“This is because of the right infrastructure and the right leadership you have put in place in Enugu State,” he added.
Ugwu, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, also recalled a recent visit by a National Assembly Health Committee team, which commended Gov. Mbah’s efforts in the health sector and departed with positive impressions.
The statewide immunisation exercise targeted children between the ages of nine and 14.
