Mr. Francis Igwe, father of former Ebonyi Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe, has been kidnapped.
He was reportedly abducted on Sunday morning while on his way to church in his Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Sources in the area told our reporter that the elder Igwe was driving to church when gunmen riding on a motorcycle double-crossed him. The assailants allegedly forced him out of his car onto their motorcycle and sped off to an unknown destination.
The Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Sunday Nwankwo, confirmed the incident. He said the local government was collaborating with security agencies to gather information and facilitate the victim’s rescue.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, initially could not be reached for comments, as he did not respond to several calls and messages sent to his phone.
However, Ukandu later confirmed the incident on Sunday in Abakaliki. He stated that the victim was abducted on Sunday morning while on his way to church in Ndufu-Alike community, Ikwo LGA.
“Yes, it is true, we are aware of the matter. He was kidnapped in Ikwo Council Area. Our men have been mobilised to the area for investigation and to find means for his rescue.
“It is very unfortunate,” he added.
