The United States government has issued a global security alert urging its citizens in Nigeria and around the world to heighten vigilance amid escalating tensions with Iran.
The advisory, released on Sunday by the U.S. Department of State, followed recent U.S. military operations targeting Iranian facilities and warned of potential travel disruptions and broader security risks.
According to the notice, rapidly evolving security conditions could affect international travel, including intermittent airspace closures.
“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide—and especially in the Middle East—should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the advisory stated.
“They may experience travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures. The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.”
U.S. nationals were also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates and to monitor the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” WhatsApp channel for additional information.
The alert comes in the aftermath of coordinated strikes reportedly carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces on Iranian targets. The attacks were said to have killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as the country’s armed forces chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi.
Iranian officials and regional observers estimate that more than 200 people were killed in the strikes, with over 700 others injured.
Several senior commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other top defense officials were also reportedly among the casualties.
In the wake of the bombardments, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran’s leadership had agreed to return to negotiations with Washington following the attacks on multiple Iranian cities.
