Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, is most likely to emerge as the consensus presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), from the South-East geo-political zone, Ikengaonline can reliably report.
PDP presidential aspirants from the zone have been in talks for a possible consensus among them as part of strategies to boost the zone’s chances at the party’s primaries slated for May 28.
All four major contestants from the zone including Obi; former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa; and Nwachukwu Anakwenze met last week in Abuja and agreed to work together as brothers.
A source close to the meeting said that Obi is likely going to be the favoured candidate considering the preponderance of goodwill for the former Governor from across the country.
The source said that all four aspirants are competent and with very clean records but Obi’s legendary and uncommon achievements when he held sway as Anambra Governor had given him an edge.
According to the source, South-East political stakeholders are cooperating for the first time towards a common goal, adding that high level consultations and negotiations are going on with other zones for their support towards the emergence of a President of South-East extraction in 2023.
Ikengaonline had reported a multi-partisan cooperation strategy that South-East leaders of thought including former PDP National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodu, Senator Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Senator Chris Anyanwu, are championing, under the auspices of the Greater Nigeria Conference, to lobby other zones of the country to support a South-East candidate for the Presidency in 2023.
