Stephen Ukandu, Umuahia The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the British Government of abandoning him in detention in Nigeria. The family expressed fury that Kanu, a British citizen, has been held by the Nigerian authorities since June 2021 following his abduction in Kenya and extraordinary rendition, yet Britain has done nothing to facilitate his freedom. Accusing Britain of maintaining criminal silence over Kanu’s plight, the family said: “If Britain cannot protect its own citizen, then it should admit publicly that some British citizens are more equal than others.”…

By Uzor Maxim Uzoatu The deadly kwashiorkor disease that was so much associated with the Biafra war has made a return to peacetime Nigeria. It was not a pretty sight seeing malnourished children with distended stomachs, nylon-like skins and dopey eyes during that evil war. The belief was that kwashiorkor had gone for good with Biafra. My shock knew no bounds when I read in the Nigerian Tribune of Saturday, October 26, 2024 that kwashiorkor is back in town. The revelation emanated from Dr Foluso Balogun, a paediatrician at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan that “for the first time…
Ike Nnachi, Abakaliki The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State in the House of Representatives, Chinedu Ogah, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the results of 192,089 candidates withheld over alleged examination malpractice. Ogah, who expressed strong dissatisfaction with the development, said failure to release the results within the stipulated time would prompt him to take legal action against the examination body. The WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut, had on Monday announced the withholding of the results of 192,089 candidates, representing 9.75% of the total…
Our Reporter, Abuja The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned what it described as an unconstitutional overreach by the Nigeria Police Force in its ongoing attempt to investigate the Attorney General of Anambra State for exercising her constitutional authority. In a statement released on Wednesday, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, criticized the police for inviting and subsequently granting bail to the Director of Public Prosecution and other law officers from the Anambra State Ministry of Justice. The officers were targeted over their implementation of a nolle prosequi—a constitutional mechanism under Section 211…

…Says union being run like a cult Stephen Ukandu, Umuahia The disbursement format for the earned allowances paid to university workers by the Federal Government appears to have triggered ripples at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), following the resignation of Dr. Philips Nto from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Dr. Nto resigned his membership of the union, citing a lack of transparency and inclusiveness in its administration. Nto, who is the Director of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre at MOUAU, lamented that the union had “been hijacked by self-centred individuals who now run it like a…
By Promise Adiele I have decided to coin the title of this week’s essay like a typical title of a literary academic paper. Writing academic papers is an engaging enterprise different from the weekly newspaper and magazine musings. Members of the literary fraternity will easily relate to ‘rethinking,’ ‘reimagining,’ ‘revisiting’ and ‘reconsidering’ of multiple literary paradigms, which deserve a second, more critical scrutiny to reveal their undifferentiated, unheralded continuum. Thanks to Jacques Derrida for giving us deconstruction, a theoretical armament that explodes the barriers of meaning, granting us the freedom to interpret ideas and texts from different perspectives. In my…
