Lawrence Nwimo, Awka Anambra State Government has commenced grassing and planting of trees at the new site of the government house still under construction in Awka, the State capital. The forestry department of the State Ministry of Environment under the supervision of the Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu, carried out the exercise recently. Grasses planted in the area include port-harcourt, fescue, vertiva, and jathropa. The Commissioner said the exercise is aimed at protecting the land from erosion and other environmental problems, adding that environment remains one of the topmost priorities in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development vision. Ugo Nosiri, Owerri Supporters of the Labour Party, LP, in Imo State have stormed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Owerri, over alleged refusal to grant the party access to documents used for the November 11 governorship poll. Ben Ezechime, Enugu Headfort Foundation has commended the recent intervention by the Federal Government and the Ministry of Interior to release 4,068 inmates from Nigerian prisons. The foundation made the commendation in a press release posted on its X (formerly Twitter handle). The foundation, however, said the action of the government was not enough to decongest the prisons. “Unfortunately, it falls short of effectively addressing the issue of prison congestion.” According the statement, contrary to popular belief, the prisons were not primarily congested with convicts but with pretrial inmates. Ben Ezechime, Enugu The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Uju Ohanenye, has instituted a suit against Enugu-based couple, Mr Ifeanyi Enwelum and Mrs Christabel Enwelum, for fundamental rights breach and sexual defilement of their nine-year-old daughter. The civil suit, filed under suit number E/987/2023 at the Enugu State High Court, seeks for the ministry to take custody of nine-year-old (name withheld) and for the respondents (the couple) to pay damages of N10 million and other reliefs.
