Ikengaonline Editorial Democracy is not just a system of government in the normative sense of being “government of the people; by the people; and for the people,” it is also essentially a practical system of government that promotes good governance by improving the life chances of the citizens through the guarantee of basic freedoms and personal liberties. In 1999 the entire country, Nigeria, returned to civil rule after many years of military rule and a few interregna of democratic experiences. While the attention of the media and civil society has been mainly focused on the performance of the Federal…
By Chido Onumah General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) will leave office on May 29 after eight uneventful years. We hope it is the last time we hear from a man who rode to power eight years ago promising to end insecurity, strengthen the economy and fight corruption, none of which he achieved. Thankfully, he has vowed not to intervene in our national life and expressed his willingness to disappear to Niger Republic if we request accountability after almost a decade of ruinous leadership. It is a fitting testament to the leadership calamity of the past eight years that Gen. Buhari…

Lawrence Nwimo, Awka The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has dismissed the allegations by Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, that the agency was after him for refusing to give its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa $2m bribe. Uwujaren, in the statement, described the governor as a suspect under investigation who would not be given dignified attention. He said: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a trending interview granted to the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting…
By E.C. Osondu In this speech, I will gently posit about the need for Ndi Igbo to embrace the Minor Musical Keys or what Chinua Achebe calls less boisterous virtues. I will also be offering a re-evaluation of the character Unoka from the novel Things Fall Apart as a character who in some way is worthy of emulation, re-evaluation and rehabilitation. In the second part of my talk I will dare to suggest that the word Igbo may not actually be an Igbo word at all, that it may have come from another ethnic group’s way of describing Ndi Igbo and may…
So his chances of re-entering the Oval Office are uncomfortably high Aglitch-plagued chat with Elon Musk, live on Twitter, is an unconventional way to launch a presidential campaign. But with the entry of Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, the race for the Republican nomination is now properly under way. The first states will not vote until January. Primaries are hard to predict, because it is expensive to conduct enough high-quality polls of primary voters in the key states. But, with that disclaimer over, one candidate has a huge, perhaps insurmountable, lead: Donald Trump. Mr Trump thus has a real chance…
Lawrence Nwimo, Awka The Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has accused Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, of being insensitive to the plights of universities in the country. The Union’s comments followed the move by the Minister to facilitate the payment of withheld salaries of some lecturers at the institution. Recall that the minister had claimed that some Faculties in the institution did not participate in the eight months industrial action and had asked the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, to pay the lecturers numbering 204 from…
