By Arinze Chijioke There has been a recent upsurge of turnout by intending voters in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Southeast, a situation many view as encouraging in a region that has been defined by voter apathy since 1999. However, as the crowds of intending voters swell in the various registration centres, official INEC weekly CVR Updates for the zones do not seem to reflect this noticeable upsurge of new registrants as the Southeast firmly remains at the basement of the Table of newly registered voters week after week. In…

By Ikem Okuhu It is obvious that the Catholic Church in Nigeria has lost the fight to rein in one of their most vocal evangelists in the South-East, who has carved a niche for himself as the champion in the very profitable area of prophetic political evangelism. I do not know just yet how this failure will impact the largest Christian denomination, whose strongest demand for its priests is unquestioning obedience, but it does not look good, considering how the fiery, often controversial sermons of Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has negated the letters and precepts of the Catholic faith and the…
By Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo On Monday, August 4, 2004, one week after he made a speech at the Democratic Party’s convention in Boston, I wrote a column for the Nigeriaworld called “Obama: An audacity of hope?” Here is how the column started. “Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Congresswoman, recently visited the White House with a congressional delegation. Making her way out, she passed President Bush, and the president literally jumped back on seeing “Obama” button pinned to her chest. Guessing what the president was thinking, she told him, “Mr. President, it is Obama with a “b”. Still, the president did not…

Stephen Ukandu, Umuahia Enugu-based Catholic priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has come under severe attacks by Nigerians for describing Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as a “stingy man.” The fiery priest had during his sermon taken Obi to the cleaners, boasting that he would not win the presidential race because of stinginess.
