Lecturers in Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu whose researches attract international recognition will receive one million naira reward from the university, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke has said.
Anieke, who is a Catholic priest, disclosed this on Wednesday in Enugu during an event to mark the beginning of the2021/2022 Academic Session of the institution.
The vice chancellor also said that any student of the Computer Science Department of the institution that developed an application relevant to the institution’s needs would receive N500, 000.
He said that the one million naira incentive was meant for individual or group research with global recognition.
He said that the new policies were meant to encourage industry and innovations among the academic staff and students.
He encouraged the academics in the institution and other staffers to pursue wisdom, adding that there was a relationship between good teaching and good research.
According to him, any student that develops an application that can dictate and show the location of lecturers, or students who missed lectures would receive the prize.
He also said that such application would be able to show the location of other categories of workers who abandoned their duty posts.
Anieke said that the institution would not tolerate any form of truancy and indiscipline among its staffers and students, adding that students must graduate at the stipulated time.
He said that lectures in the institution had been adjusted to hold from Tuesdays to Saturdays until further notice due to the prevailing situation in parts of the country.
He said that the institution had zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices.
The priest warned against any form of harassment, extortion or use of harsh words on students or staff and encouraged workers and students to place wisdom and knowledge of God above all things.
He said that the institution had broken new grounds by becoming the first in Africa where European New Development Plan would start.
The vice chancellor said that the project had started with the take-off of the construction of the European Business Park at the Ugwuomu Campus of the university.
He said that no fewer than 50 graduates of the university were studying in foreign universities on scholarship from partner institutions
Anieke said that the university had also introduced ‘One Day Vice Chancellor’ to encourage competition and excellenceamong students.
In a goodwill message, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor MarySylvia Nwachukwu, welcomed the students back on campus and urged them to stay away from bad peer influence.
Also, the President, Godfrey Okoye University Students Council of Honour, Mr Success Enenta, welcome the new and returning students back to the university.
