Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned the violent attack on his supporters during an expanded stakeholders meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Ekweremadu disclosed this in a statement on Sunday signed by his Media Adviser, Uche Anichukwu, and made available to newsmen in Enugu.
Recall that the PDP in the council had summoned a stakeholders’ meeting on April 9 at Ndeaboh but the meeting ended in a fiasco during which supporters and associates of the senator were attacked.
For instance, Mr. Chinedu Okwu, member representing Aninri State Constituency in the State House of Assembly and others were critically injured and hospitalised.
Meanwhile, Ekweremadu condemned the incident and described it as “a rude shock to him.”
He said that the incident was an act of intolerance and a deliberate attempt to pollute the process leading to the 2023 general election in the state.
“This incident is at variance with the peace-loving nature of Aninri people. Therefore, I condemn in strongest terms this attempt to stoke fire and political violence in the area.
“I also condemn any attempt to pollute the processes leading up to the 2023 elections in Enugu State with acts of political intolerance, intimidation, violence, and destruction of lives and property,” he said.
The lawmaker called on security agencies in the state to fish out the perpetrators and masterminds of the act and bring them to book.
He sympathised with the lawmaker and others who were injured during the incident.
“I urge our supporters and the good people of Aninri and Enugu State to maintain the peace.
“We have been through this road before and the good Lord, who saw us through it all, will surely see us through this and to victory, once again,” Ekweremadu said.
