The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Goodwin Emefiele, may be in for more troubles as the former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has called for his prosecution.
Odinkalu accused Emefiele who had shown interest in the 2023 presidential race under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of overseeing corruption in the apex bank.
The call by Odinkalu followed the vacation of the exparte order by Delta State High Court, sitting in Kwale, restraining the CBN Governing Board from sacking Emefiele.
In the suit marked HCK/38/2022, and filed by Mr. Nkwo Augustine Eddiego, the presiding judge, Justice D. C Maidoh, Tuesday, vacated the restraining order.
He ruled that “since there was no motion on ground or notice seeking extension of the earlier order issued on May 5, 2022, which, according to the Court was deemed to have expired after seven days, the exparte order is hereby deemed vacated and set aside” .
In a swift reaction after the Delta court judgement, Professor Odinkalu, took to his Twitter handle and called for Emefiele’s sack and prosecution.
“#Breaking: The High Court of Delta State sitting in Kwale has discharged the order restraining the Board of @cenbank from firing the criminal & bandit, #EmefiOle, @GodwinIEmefiele, who has taken the #CBN hostage.
“So, now, we insist #MeffyMustGoToJail,” he tweeted.
Legal icon, Femi Falana, had also demanded that Emefiele should resign his appointment with the CBN or be sacked by the President.
There has also been rising clamour for the CBN boss to be relieved of his duties if he fails to resign having shown interest in partisan politics.
